NEWS RELEASE: RGDATA PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF: STOP SMOKING PRODUCT TO BE SOLD IN ALL LOCAL STORES
Today, RGDATA, the voice of independent retailers, welcomes the decision by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (formerly the Irish Medicines Board) to switch the status of Nicorette nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) from "pharmacy only" to "general sale" meaning certain stop smoking products can be sold in local shops.
"RGDATA has campaigned for this change over the past 10 years. We have made numerous submissions to make these products available for sale in local shops and are delighted to note that persistence pays off," said Tara Buckley, Director General, RGDATA.
This will be the first NRT product range available for general sale in Ireland, and will result in these products being more widely accessible by people wishing to seek assistance to reduce or quit smoking. It is anticipated that the products within this range will become available on general sale in retailers in Ireland from later this year (late August or early September).
The HRPA's decision follows a detailed assessment of the safety and efficacy of several NRT products which have been available in non-pharmacy outlets in other EU countries for some time.
